General Information About the Spectrometer

Components

  • R – Tube with glowing gas
  • Sp – Aperture with slit for light entry
  • Ko – Collimator
  • Pr – Glass prism

Function
The light emitted by the excited gas atoms is separated into its spectral components by refraction and dispersion in the prism. The image shows a line spectrum, typical for gases. Such spectrometers can be used to identify which elements are present in an unknown substance. The spectral lines „reveal“ each element.
