The lamp (N) emits light quanta with a wavelength of 589.3 nm, which are absorbed by the sodium atoms contained in the sphere (R). These atoms are initially in their ground state. The light emitted by the lamp has exactly the wavelength required to excite the sodium atoms. They absorb the energy, remain in an excited state for a short time, and then release light quanta.

As an analogy, imagine two tuning forks vibrating in resonance.
